-Según una costumbre vasca ancestral, propia de los cementerios, se evocaba la supervivencia de los muertos mediante figuras antropomórficas donde se encendían velas. Según Barandiarán se establece una simbología entre vela y cuerpo humano. La vela simbolizaba al difunto. La etimología de la palabra sugiere los términos argi (luz) y ola (madera).
-La traducción castellana sería "tabla de la cera", consistente en un soporte de madera en forma de tabla (tablilla) donde se enrolla la cera o cerilla (argizai) que arde en recuerdo de los difuntos. La argizaiola, como objeto de dimensiones reducidas (raramente sobrepasa los cincuenta centímetros de longitud) asible por la parte de debajo.

-According to an ancient Basque custom, typical of cemeteries, the survival of the dead was evoked through anthropomorphic figures where candles were lit. According to Barandiarán, a symbology is established between the candle and the human body. The candle symbolized the deceased. The etymology of the word suggests the terms argi (light) and wave (wood).
-The Spanish translation would be "wax table", consisting of a wooden support in the shape of a board (tablet) where the wax or match (argizai) is rolled up and burns in memory of the deceased. The argizaiola, as an object of reduced dimensions (it rarely exceeds fifty centimeters in length) that can be grasped from the bottom.
