Se usa especialmente con niños recién nacidos, a quienes se les entregan varias cigüas engarzadas en brazaletes o cadenas para protegerlos del mal de ojo y del diablo. Estas cigüas tradicionalmente están hechas de azabache. El azabache es una lignita, un carbón mineral creado durante los períodos Jurásico y Cretácico.
-En Asturias, a la que conoce como "La Costa Jurásica", el azabache es el material fósil de origen vegetal más importante y representativo. Fue, sin duda, el mejor de los españoles y de todo el continente europeo e igual al famoso Whitby.
