-La Cigüa (Figa en gallego o Higa en español) es un amuleto profundamente arraigado en las tradiciones ancestrales de las comarcas del norte de Asturias y Galicia (España).

-Es un símbolo protector contra la envidia, los celos y el mal de ojo. Se usa especialmente con niños recién nacidos, a quienes se les entregan varias cigüas engarzadas en brazaletes o cadenas para protegerlos del mal de ojo y del diablo. Estas cigüas tradicionalmente están hechas de azabache. El azabache es una lignita, un carbón mineral creado durante los períodos Jurásico y Cretácico.

-En Asturias, a la que conoce como "La Costa Jurásica", el azabache es el material fósil de origen vegetal más importante y representativo. Fue, sin duda, el mejor de los españoles y de todo el continente europeo e igual al famoso Whitby.

-The Cigüa (Figa in galician or Higa in spanish) is an amulet deeply rooted in the ancestral traditions of the northern counties of Asturias and Galicia (Spain). It's a protective symbol against envy, jealousy and evil eye.

-It's used especially with newborn children, to whom they are given several cigüas set in bracelets or chains to protect them from the evil eye and the devil. Cigüas traditionally are made of jet. Jet is a lignite, a mineral coal created during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.

-In Asturias, which it knows as "The Jurassic Coast", jet is the most important and representative fossil material of plant origin. It was, without a doubt, the best of the Spanish and of the entire European continent and equal to the famous Whitby.
